Lip fillers are a great way to enhance your looks. It has seen a rise in popularity in recent years, spearheaded by celebrities as shown on social media, making the aesthetic procedure one of the most popular in the realm of cosmetic enhancements.
If you’re planning on having lip fillers, there are certain things you need to know. Before you begin to get a consultation from a reputable clinic, you need to have a brief understanding of the possibilities of a lip filler, as well as the different types of fillers available.
Let’s begin by talking about the general overview of lip fillers.
What are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are a cosmetic procedure that involves injecting the lips with a substance that makes them look bigger and plumper. With age, the volume of your lips can diminish, causing it to sag or thin out, making you look old. Or, if you naturally have thin lips and you want to have fuller lips, then lip fillers are the ideal choice for you.
Lip fillers are semi-permanent with different types of fillers lasting anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. If you want to enhance your lips without a permanent commitment, as compared to lip augmentation, then lip fillers are a great option. You can choose to have them again after 6 months or not.
With the power to dramatically enhance the lips with little to no pain, low downtime and recovery, and lower risks compared to other cosmetic procedures, fillers are an ideal choice for anyone who simply wants to make a semi-permanent change to their face.
What are the Different Types of Lip Fillers?
The most common types of lip fillers are Restylane, Juvederm, and Radiesse. Botox can also be used to inject the lips but has a different effect.
Let’s discuss each one and what results you can expect:
1. RESTYLANE® For Lip Fillers
Restylane is one of the most popular types of lip fillers available. It is a type of hyaluronic filler with a high water affinity, meaning it’s excellent at retaining moisture. It also offers high elasticity, allowing you to move your lips freely while it maintains its shape due to its high viscosity levels as well. The result of Restylane is natural-looking and softer lips that are plumper but not puffy.
There are three different Restylane fillers: regular, Silk, and Refyne/Defyne. Regular Restylane offers a dramatic and enlarging effect, while Silk offers a more subtle result. Refyne/Defyne, on the other hand, offers a more natural look.
Restylane typically lasts for 6 to 12 months.
2. JUVÉDERM® For Lip Fillers
Juvederm is a soft tissue filler that helps to fill out lines and give a smoother appearance. It has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid than Restylane, and give the lips a softer and more horizontal spread of direction. There are two types of Juvederm, which are Ultra Plus and the Volbella.
The Juvederm Ultra Plus offers a more dramatic effect, which lasts from 6 months to 1 year. Volbella, on the other hand, has a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid and the result are less dramatic, with subtle and natural results. Volbella lasts from 1 to 2 years.
3. RADIESSE® For Lip Fillers
Radiesse is a dermal filler usually used on wrinkles but has also been used on lips. It is a calcium-based product and the only filler used with a 1.5 cc syringe. It is known to stimulate collagen production in the lips and can last up to 12 to 18 months.
4. BOTOX® For Lip Fillers
Botox is not a lip filler per se but it can be injected into the lips for a bigger look. It does not plump the lips, however, but if you want to have larger lips, then Botox may be the right choice for you. When injected on the upper lips, it can make it look bigger, as it paralyzes the upper lip muscles and forces it to curl up.
When planning on having your lips done you must only consider a registered, highly experienced, and expert to do the job. There is a high risk for infections, a lumpy appearance, scarring, and blocking of blood vessels when they’re not done properly. Some problems would even require surgery to correct.

I’m such a coward when it comes to lip fillers. I have thin lips but I am so scared to do that procedure.
I much prefer to use great cosmetic products, rather than, I admit, inject anything or surgery!
I have never considered lip fillers. However, they have definitely become popular, and I do like to be aware of the trends.
I had no idea there were so many kinds of fillers out there. This is a very interesting read. It seems like it’s very important to pick the right filler for your needs.
